Look out for our itinerary that explores the story of glass through the eyes of Mr Pilkington from St Helens, to the cathedrals in nearby Liverpool and their magnificent windows.
Meet your guide en route to The World of Glass in St Helens. After a tour and lunch, head on to the vibrant city of Liverpool to admire the glass in each of the iconic Cathedrals.
The World of Glass
See what made St. Helens great from its humble beginnings to its rise as a world leader in glass making. Ever wondered what life was like in a Victorian town? Step into St Helens past and relive life in the town in the last century.
Liverpool is blessed with two cathedrals – one Catholic, one Anglican – and as well as contrasting in styles, they are both unique in other ways. The Anglican Cathedral – known as Liverpool Cathedral – may at first be mistaken for a medieval Gothic masterpiece, but like its Catholic counterpart, it is firmly of the twentieth century and took 74 years to build.
The Catholic Cathedral, or Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, to give it its full title, was completed in only 5 years during the 1960s and is still the only circular cathedral in Europe. Anyone can take in the beautiful colours cast onto the marble floor by the largest piece of stained glass in the world.
